Steel Grade of Raw Material
Scaffolding pipe raw material is steel plate. Only tested past steel plate coil are approved accepted in raw material stock. Raw material testing including chemical composition according to BS1139, physical property of tensile strength, yield strength, elongation.
Welding Line Testing
Scaffolding pipe welding line quality is tested according to ISO3834 and EN1090 CE requirement. While flatten testing is also essential in scaffolding pipe welding line testing.
Finished Scaffolding Pipe Testing
GI scaffolding pipes are tested after galvanizing, while black tube are tested after welding directly. The testing include chemical composition, physical property and flatten. Clients can get mill certificated, test report from us for each batch of material.
BS 1139-1:1990 (confirmed 2016) §4.1 specifies OD 48.3±0.5mm, wall thickness 2.0mm minimum (3.2mm for heavy duty). Mass per unit: 4.37 kg/m at 4.0mm wall. EN 39:2001 §5.1 requires OD 48.3±0.5mm, wall ≥ 3.2mm for standard use, ≥ 4.0mm for heavy-duty. EN 39 Table 2 sets maximum deviation: OD ±0.5mm, out-of-roundness ±0.5mm. ASTM A53-22 §6.5 permits OD ±1% for pipe up to NPS 2. Length tolerance per BS 1139: +0/-5mm for cut-to-order lengths.
Per ISO 1461:2022 §6, HDG coating ≥ 600 g/m² (≈ 85 μm) for steel ≥ 6mm thick, ≥ 400 g/m² (≈ 55 μm) for 3-6mm. The Fe-Zn intermetallic alloy layers per ASTM A90/A90M provide cathodic protection — exposed steel is protected sacrificially at cut edges. Electro-galvanizing per ISO 2081 (Fe/Zn 8-12 μm) has no alloy layer; coating life is proportional to thickness per ISO 9223 corrosion rate curves. For 20-30 year outdoor service in C3/C4 environments (urban/industrial coastal), HDG per ISO 1461 is required. Salt spray test per ASTM B117: HDG ≥ 720 h to red rust, EG ≤ 96 h.
BS 1139-2:1990 Section 6 specifies working load 1.5-2.0 tons/leg at 200mm base plate. Beyond 1.5m free height, load capacity follows Euler buckling per EN 1993-1-1 §6.3.1: P_cr = π²EI / (KL)². For 48.3×3.2mm S235GT (yield ≥ 235 MPa per EN 10025-2 §6): buckling load at 2m = 27.3 kN, drops to 12.1 kN at 3m. Minimum safety factor per BS EN 12811-1:2003 Table 2: 2.0 on yield strength (Rm/Re ≥ 2.0). For heavy duty: safety factor 2.5 on yield. Welded joint efficiency per EN 1993-1-8 Table 4.1: fillet welds 0.8× base metal strength.
EN 39:2001 §6 specifies S235GT per EN 10025-2:2019: C ≤ 0.20%, Mn ≤ 1.40%, P ≤ 0.045%, S ≤ 0.045%, Al ≥ 0.020%. Tensile 360-510 MPa per EN 10025-2 Table 2. Yield ≥ 235 MPa (t ≤ 16mm), ≥ 225 MPa (16-40mm). Elongation ≥ 24% per EN ISO 6892-1 method A. Impact ≥ 27 J at 0°C for thickness ≥ 15mm per EN 10025-2 §7. These limits match BS 1139-1 Table 1 mechanical requirements. ASTM A53 Grade B alternative: yield ≥ 240 MPa, tensile ≥ 415 MPa.
Per EN 10204:2004: Type 3.1 inspection certificate (issuing integrated with manufacturer) or Type 3.2 (independent third party — SGS/BV/TÜV). BS 1139-1 §7 requires: chemical composition per EN 10025-2 §5.1 + A1 method; tensile test per EN ISO 6892-1 at 0.004 s⁻¹ strain rate; flattening test per EN 10236 (no cracking at 0.67×OD gap). EN 39 §9 adds bend test per ISO 7438 (180° at 2×OD former) and weld integrity per ISO 10893-6 eddy current. Hydrostatic test per EN 10216-1 §7: 3 seconds at 5 MPa minimum. Dimensional audit per ISO 2768-1 ±0.5mm.
Standard per BS 1139-1 §8.2: hexagonal bundle of 37 or 61 pieces, steel straps at 1m intervals, both ends capped with plastic protectors. End-marking per EN 10219-2 §9. 20ft container: 8-12 tons (480-720 pcs at 48.3×3.2×6m). 40ft container: 18-22 tons. FOB Tianjin/Qingdao port, CIF, CFR, or DAP incoterms. Lashing per IMO/ILO guidelines. For moisture-sensitive projects: VCI (vapor corrosion inhibitor) paper wrap + outer woven PP bag per MIL-PRF-3420H. Container dehumidifier per BS 1139-1 Annex A.
Stock items (48.3×3.2×6m hot-dip galvanized per BS 1139): 5-10 days. Standard mill order (sizes 3-6.3m, batch ≥ 50 tons): 20-30 days. Custom specifications (special grade or coating): 30-45 days. Minimum order quantity: 5 tons for stock sizes, 25 tons for mill direct. Raw material HRC inventory maintained at 8-week buffer. ISO 9001:2015 §8.3 production planning with weekly progress reporting for orders ≥ 100 tons.
BS 1139-1:1990 §8.2 defines bundle formats:
(1) 37-piece (hexagonal 4:3 ratio) — 0.35m² cross section, net weight 1.04 tons at 48.3×3.2×6m.
(2) 61-piece (hexagonal 5:4 ratio) — 0.46m² cross section, net weight 1.71 tons.
The 37-piece bundle fits 24 units per 20ft container; the 61-piece bundle fits 14 units per 20ft container. Both allow single forklift handling at 2-3 tons capacity. Steel strap tension per ISO 5446: 15-20 N·m banding. End ring crush: ≥ 1.25× bundle weight per ASTM D642.
