Benefits of Seamless SS Pipe
Seamless SS Pipe is resistant to rust and other corrosive attack. It is heat-resistant for high-performance and high-temperature use
Applications & Uses of Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe
Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe can resist high temperatures for cleanliness and maintain the purity of materials which contact stainless steel directly. SS seamless tube can be used in the following fileds:
- Chemical plants
- Aviation fields
- Marine equipment
- Cryogenic transportation
- Medical & architectural industries

Per ASTM A312/A312M-22 §6: 304L minimum tensile 485 MPa, yield 170 MPa, elongation 30% (2in gauge). 316L: tensile 485 MPa, yield 170 MPa, elongation 30%. The key difference is chemical: 316L contains 2-3% Mo (ASTM A240 Table 2) providing pitting resistance equivalent PRE ≥ 24 vs 304L PRE ≥ 18. Hardness per ASTM A312 Table 3: 304L ≤ 90 HRB, 316L ≤ 95 HRB. EN 10216-5:2013 §9 specifies 304L yield ≥ 190 MPa (t ≤ 16mm), 316L ≥ 185 MPa. Impact at 20°C: KV ≥ 60J per EN 10216-5 Table 5.
Per ASTM A480/A480M-22 §5, the standard finish types are:
(1) Bright Annealed (BA) — hydrogen atmosphere at 1050-1120°C, surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.5µm, no scale, ideal for pharmaceutical/semiconductor.
(2) Pickled — immersion in HNO3+HF bath per ASTM A380-17 §7.4, removes 5-10µm surface layer, standard finish.
(3) Polished — mechanical #1-#8 grit per ASTM A480 §5.2, Ra 0.1-0.4µm for sanitary.
(4) Passivated — nitric acid treatment per ASTM A967-17 §5, removes free iron. EN 10216-5 §8.2 specifies pickled or BA as default. Surface roughness per ISO 4287: Ra ≤ 0.8µm for BA.
Cold drawing per ASTM A312 §4: hot finished seamless pipe (rough pierced hollow via Mannesmann process) is cold drawn through a tungsten carbide die with 10-25% area reduction. Drawing speed 3-12m/min per EN 10216-5 §6.2. After drawing, solution annealing at 1040-1120°C (304L) or 1065-1175°C (316L) per ASTM A312 Table 6 for ≥ 30 minutes per 25mm thickness. Final quench in water or rapid air to retain austenitic structure per ASTM A262 Practice E. Cold work increases yield by 30-50% vs hot finished; final anneal restores corrosion resistance. Dimensional tolerances per ASTM A999-21 §7: OD ±0.13mm (≤ 25mm), ±0.20mm (25-50mm).
Per ASTM A312 §7-8 and EN 10204:2004. Seven mandatory checks per lot:
(1) Chemical analysis per ASTM E353 — C ≤ 0.030% (304L/316L), Cr 18-20% (304L), Cr 16-18% (316L), Mo 2-3% (316L only).
(2) Tensile testing per ASTM A370 §7 — longitudinal specimens.
(3) Flattening test per ASTM A312 §8.2 — no cracking on 2/3 original OD.
(4) Hydrostatic test per §8.3 — 3000-5000 psi or NDE per ASME B31.3 Table A-1B.
(5) PMI per ASTM E1476-22 using XRF — verify alloy chemistry on 100% of material.
(6) Intergranular corrosion per ASTM A262 Practice E — weight loss ≤ 2.0 g/m²h.
(7) Dimensional inspection per ASTM A999-21 §7 — OD, WT, straightness. All results on MTC per EN 10204 3.1.
Per ASTM G48-11 Method A: 316L pitting temperature ≥ 25°C in 6% FeCl3 vs 304L ≥ 5°C. ASTM A262 Practice E: intergranular corrosion — 316L weight loss ≤ 2.0 g/m²h after 48h in boiling CuSO4+H2SO4. Practice C (Huey): ≤ 0.15 mm/month in boiling 65% HNO3. For chloride SCC per ASTM G36: 316L resistant up to 1000ppm Cl− at 80°C. NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-3: 316L acceptable for sour service up to 150°C with hardness ≤ 22 HRC. EN 10216-5 Table 6 specifies HB ≤ 220 for both grades.
Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, Lloyds, or TUV per ISO 2859-1 AQL 4.0. MTC per EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2. PED 2014/68/EU CE mark for pressure applications — notified body inspection per Annex I §1 (Category II-III). NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 certification for sour service. Packaging per ASTM A700-14: plastic caps both ends (carbon steel caps for heavy wall), VCI paper wrap, then PE film for sea shipments per DIN 55531. Wooden crates for polished/BA pipes with foam inserts. Container loading: 20ft 8-12 tons, 40ft 18-22 tons with dunnage per IMO/ILO.
